Full Version: Buffalo's Curse.
Buffalo Sabres > Buffalo Sabres Hockey > Sabres Hockey
sabreslove28
so people have said for awhile now that
"buffalo is cursed with sports"

based on the begining of the season, do you think that saying will continue.. or do you think that this is the year to break such "curse" ?
letsgobflo
Too early to make any predictions.
WNYpride
To early to tell and if you learned anything from last year or last Monday Night for that matter, until the final whistle blows, nobody has won anything.

So many people, including myself, felt that last year was "the" year... barf.

But like always, I'm hoping this year it will change!
hockeyrulesmylife
The curse will be around until Buffalo wins a championship.

The only reason why we have not won a cup or superbowl was because we were never the best team. For many years the Sabres and Bill could not spend the same amount of money on great players. The Bills owner doesn't want to win anything and the owner of the Sabres before Tom G was a cheap skate. When the Bills were in those 4 superbowls they had the following problems.
1. !st super bowl they had the last ranked defense
2. last 2 vs dallas Bills had less talent on both sides of the ball.
3. 2nd game they should of won but their defense still stunk.

"the" Year was the 2005-2006 season. That team had more grit with McKee and Grier in the lineup. Not to mention the PP and PK was alot better. All Drury and Briere did on the PP is pass the puck non-stop. The Curse....again what witch,Gnome, or wizard put it on BUffalo? Why would you curse Buffalo anyways? Was it buried on the ancient tombs of the Gnomes Of Christmas past from the future? I think not.

I disagree about Super Bowl XXV... the Bills were the better team. Why else would they have been such huge favorites? I would take Kelly over Hostetler, I would take Thomas over OJ Anderson, ect... other than LT can you name 5 players on the Giants d without looking them up? In fact, they beat the Giants in NY just weeks before the Super Bowl. The Bills got outcoached in the Super Bowl. The Giants held the ball for 41 minutes... Albeit the defense missed a lot of tackles, but they were "bend but don't break" all year long. The offense was a tremendous powerhouse, Thurman Thomas should've still been named MVP. 19 pts in 19 minutes of possession. That was THE game that still hurts the most of out all of the missed chances (Bills vs. Sabres). They had it.

I agree with the Washington game, they were better... as for Dallas, free agency wasn't like it is now, the Bills held those core players for a decade. Nate Odems was the first "big name" to leave. Look at all of the Bills getting into the HOF, right alongside Dallas players. I don't think there was as big of a gap as you claim.

i'll sometimes say it out of jest, but i truly don't believe in this "buffalo curse". our time will come. i thought last year was really going to be our year, but it just wasn't meant to be. and i don't think a curse had anything to do with that.

Ummm...

Were you around in those days, or simply quoting stats you found??

In 1990 (season), the Bill's were obviously the better team. Out-coached in the bowl by Parcells and Bellichick (Giant's "D" co-ordinator). The Bill's D stats were very misleading. They had a pretty strong defense, but were on the field a lot, since the K-Gun scored quickly / often at-will... Yardage gained was misleading stat. The Bill's in those years also had a timing issue. By far they were the best team in the AFC. Those years was in the midst of the NFC's domination of the AFC, so what essentially happened annually was that the Bill's had a reasonably easy time (the comeback game against Houston, and Denver AFC Championship game in '92 notwithstanding) in the AFC playoffs, while the NFC teams came out of that division playoff ready, having beaten 2 or 3 top-rated opponents. In 1991, the bill's ran into a VERY hot 'skins team.

At least that's my slant on those Bill's years a decade and-a-half later (you all can put your own slants on it...). The fact remains the Bill's beat those NFC opponents regularly in the regular season. going ot be very hard for ANY team to ever repeat 4 straight times in a Bowl (but agree it would have made it sweeter if they'd have won at least one...).

The Sabres were great (their best years) before there was free-agency. No truth to the fact the Knox family would skimp on players. They were the Sabres first owner-ship group. The teams they had were never quite the best, but very good and entertaining. Back in the mid-70's, they had the best offensive team (before Montreal jelled with guys like Lafleur, Gainey, Cornyouer and Robinson and won four straight cups) that also had an untimely situation of running into Philadelphia's best broad-street bullies team in the 75' Finals.

So in my opinion, the "Buffalo Curse" has some validity (not that I'm any less of a fan) in that there's always been some situatoin / opponent (the '75 Flyers, the game-plan that Parcells and Bellichick put together in the '91 Super Bowl) that was able ot offset our strengths, and ultimately cost our city a World Championship.

You notice I don't add the Sabres "no goal" year in here... Don't know much about that ownership group (after the Knox family) of the Sabres / how they came into power, etc (those were happening when the Sabres had sunk a bit, and I had moved out of town, and following pro hockey..., although I attended most every Sabres game in LA, was pretty low on my priority totem-pole)... That team ('99) was by no means the best in the NHL. I agree the Sabres got the shaft from the NHL there with the ruling, and how they'd ruled the "man in the crease" that entire season, but it would have been the all-time fluke in WNY sports history, had that team gone on to take the cup (while others did not), given how weak they were on offense.

All I can end this by saying (as I end most every post I place in these forums)...

GO BUFFALO BILLS / SABRES!! (it will happen one day...)

I forgot something. The bills were outcoached. The time the Giants had the ball was like 40 minutes to the bills 20. The Defense of the Bills was horrible. They gave up the most rushing yards in the league that year. They let the giants run the ball right down their throats. The Giants had the better coach. It takes a great defense to win. The Colts of last year were the only team that really had a poor rush defense that won the Bowl. The Bills defense was really not good in that first superbowl. The AFC was really weak back then. The NFC had 4 teams that would have beaten the Bills in those superbowl years. It was really not that impressive that the Bills beat the Raiders(without Bo Jackson) and the Houston Oilers. They could not even tackle when it counted. Mark Ingram.

I really don't want to argue about the Bills on the Sabres board and everyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion (that's why it's fun to read), however... I think if you asked just about anyone who was around to watch that season, even Giants fans, they'll admit the Bills were the better team. That's what makes sports so entertaining, they have to play the game! On paper, I would take the Bills all day long. Again, THEY BEAT the Giants in the Meadowlands that same year... The Raiders were a good football team in 1990, the AFC Championship blowout was unreal. Go back and watch that game some time. Defense played pretty well too. That's it, I'm done ranting about the Bills. Let's Go Sabres!
SabreWolf
Maybe believing in the curse, makes the curse real?
Gretzkywhinestomuch
Curse is just sugar coated way to say we were beaten.

Unless Hecht open a mummys tomb and stole his treasure or Connolly made fun of a witch doctor or Tallinder carries a monkey paw, then there is no curse
SabreWolf
Or Peters broke a mirror or Lydman opened an umbrella inside.
FGWB
Well we did have the Bandits who won 3 championships, the Bills won AFL Titles in '64 and '65.

Not COMPLETELY cursed, only in the big-time sports for the big-time games smile.gif
ScaryGood4851
This is the silver lining, yes, but in my opinion, we're cursed and that is that.

If you watched the Dallas/Bills game it was made perfectly clear.
Schenk
and look where the bandits are today...oh wait..what look at the bisons next? HA baseball....

lets not forget the braves they were a in the top league and they almost won the championship like two times in a row...then they moved away because no one like basketball here.

Agreed.

There is a curse and fans have definitely conributed to the jinx. Every time I saw someone waving a model of that silver shiny thingy right in the stands of the arena, it drove me crazy.

WELL, I was around back in those Superbowl days. I know for a FACT
that the Bills lost......I forgot which game it was, there was so
many...anyways, they lost the one game cos the other team
sent Downtown Julie Brown from Club MTV here to distract
them. Hang on, J Lo's on Dancing with the Stars..............
Didn't MTV used to accually play music at one time?
And some of it was accually pretty good.
Must be that bump on J Lo's mid section thats got her so
out of breath. Hmmmm...
