The only reason why we have not won a cup or superbowl was because we were never the best team. For many years the Sabres and Bill could not spend the same amount of money on great players. The Bills owner doesn't want to win anything and the owner of the Sabres before Tom G was a cheap skate. When the Bills were in those 4 superbowls they had the following problems.
1. !st super bowl they had the last ranked defense
2. last 2 vs dallas Bills had less talent on both sides of the ball.
3. 2nd game they should of won but their defense still stunk.
Ummm...
Were you around in those days, or simply quoting stats you found??
In 1990 (season), the Bill's were obviously the better team. Out-coached in the bowl by Parcells and Bellichick (Giant's "D" co-ordinator). The Bill's D stats were very misleading. They had a pretty strong defense, but were on the field a lot, since the K-Gun scored quickly / often at-will... Yardage gained was misleading stat. The Bill's in those years also had a timing issue. By far they were the best team in the AFC. Those years was in the midst of the NFC's domination of the AFC, so what essentially happened annually was that the Bill's had a reasonably easy time (the comeback game against Houston, and Denver AFC Championship game in '92 notwithstanding) in the AFC playoffs, while the NFC teams came out of that division playoff ready, having beaten 2 or 3 top-rated opponents. In 1991, the bill's ran into a VERY hot 'skins team.
At least that's my slant on those Bill's years a decade and-a-half later (you all can put your own slants on it...). The fact remains the Bill's beat those NFC opponents regularly in the regular season. going ot be very hard for ANY team to ever repeat 4 straight times in a Bowl (but agree it would have made it sweeter if they'd have won at least one...).
The Sabres were great (their best years) before there was free-agency. No truth to the fact the Knox family would skimp on players. They were the Sabres first owner-ship group. The teams they had were never quite the best, but very good and entertaining. Back in the mid-70's, they had the best offensive team (before Montreal jelled with guys like Lafleur, Gainey, Cornyouer and Robinson and won four straight cups) that also had an untimely situation of running into Philadelphia's best broad-street bullies team in the 75' Finals.
So in my opinion, the "Buffalo Curse" has some validity (not that I'm any less of a fan) in that there's always been some situatoin / opponent (the '75 Flyers, the game-plan that Parcells and Bellichick put together in the '91 Super Bowl) that was able ot offset our strengths, and ultimately cost our city a World Championship.
You notice I don't add the Sabres "no goal" year in here... Don't know much about that ownership group (after the Knox family) of the Sabres / how they came into power, etc (those were happening when the Sabres had sunk a bit, and I had moved out of town, and following pro hockey..., although I attended most every Sabres game in LA, was pretty low on my priority totem-pole)... That team ('99) was by no means the best in the NHL. I agree the Sabres got the shaft from the NHL there with the ruling, and how they'd ruled the "man in the crease" that entire season, but it would have been the all-time fluke in WNY sports history, had that team gone on to take the cup (while others did not), given how weak they were on offense.
All I can end this by saying (as I end most every post I place in these forums)...
GO
BUFFALO BILLS / SABRES!! (it will happen one day...)
